WHEELCHAIRED

MEMORIES. My mother was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) last August. She is already permanently in a wheelchair. I drive to Bilbao every week to visit her. When she was young she used to drive herself. She did drive since she was eighteen, very unusual for a Spanish woman in the 1950's. She used to take my sister and me to the studio of a painter to pose for portraits and then to pick up my father from the train that arrived in Hendaye, at the French border, from Paris.
My father left us for a Parisian woman soon after that. And then he left that one for another one and then another one.
We did have a hard time. My mother suffered, and then she was hard on us too, there was no joy, and we all suffered. She started to work as a teacher and to give piano lessons. We lived on that while I was young. I studied in a Public School and with scholarships. Then, after my grandfather died and we inherited some money (from one of my mother's uncles too), things improved.
The portraits hung placidly at my mother's place now. But in the worst moments, when in a crisis, the worst fear is still abandonment.

WAIHEKE ISLAND, New Zealand

PLACES. If you happen to be around, take the ferry from Auckland Harbour to Waiheke Island in the middle of Auckland Bay. It is really close, people commute from the island to work in the city.
We did stay at the Lavander Hill, a place with 3 or 4 rooms only, that was all, and the feeling that you could be in Provence but for the added magic of the very small island. A single narrow road goes around, with vineyards and cellars in every corner. I have worked in the wine business many years and I had never seen anything like that.
Go and visit Goldwater State and have a glass of good wine there. I had met Kim and Jeannete Goldwater in France at a dinner at Chateau Lafite with the Baron de Rothschild, and then I visited them in Waiheke once. They might remember me but, by now, they have probably left the day to day business to their daughter and will not be around.

KEW GARDENS

PLACES. I only went once. I wish I had been there, well look after, all this time.

Royal Botanic Gardens. Kew. Surrey. England.

TIMELESS PATTERNS

ART. Kristopher K, an Australian designer blog, has immediately brought William Morris, the nineteenth century designer, into my mind.
When I was living in the UK I used to send William Morris wall paper patterns as Christmas Cards. Some of the recipients might still remember.
Timeless patterns, timeless memories.

SHADOWLANDS (1993) by Richard Attenborough

FILMS. It is a beautiful movie, based on the true story of the English writer CS Lewis about repressed emotions that finally give in to a burst of love. The happiness now is part of the pain then. The pain now is part of the happiness then. There is no way to have one and not the other.
Watching it, yet again, has brought back my deep love of England, the manners of its people, the beauty of its countryside, and with it, the need to visit, someday, like in the movie, the Golden Valley of CS Lewis childhood in Herefordshire, a picture that was a sort of image of heaven for him, that turns - by the end of the movie and his fated love affair with the American poet Joy Gresham - into a symbol of the utter happiness of elusive joy.

FRANK CAPRA'S AGE

FILMS. Scott and I spent half a night one day in Athens watching a bunch of old Gary Cooper and Frank Capra movies of the 30s and 40s like Meet John Doe and Mr. Deeds goes to town on a TMC rally on the TV. Films with a soul and with a cry on unfairness and unjustice. It was really the Golden Age of Hollywood.

FILMS. It is the story of the young men, Algerian, Tunisians and Morocann, who joined voluntarily the French Army and fought bravely, and most died, for the liberation of France in WW2, to be paid back with bigotry and discrimination. As it happens many times the Others are the best of Us.
A beautiful movie made without anger, poetic, with the delicate French accents of the South of the Mediterranean.
Their war cry was: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE WORLD by E.H.Gombrich

BOOKS. A book for children that discerning adults will read for themselves to regain contact with the spirit of European humanism. Centuries of wars and disputes show us how careful we need to be with propaganda and with being provided scapegoats to incite us to action, someone to blame for our sufferings. The Indians, the Protestant, the Muslims, the Catholics, the Jews, the Others. When the Enlightenment seemed well stablished came the even darker ages of Hitler and Stalin. Beware of thinking that we can take a rest in the struggle against blaming the Others. The struggle for tolerance and understanding will never end.

THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (1995)

FILMS. The story is really moving. Life is a surprise at the other side of the bridge, the dream that keeps us marching. But only when you expect nothing dreams become true.
Meryl Streep has always been my favourite heroine, "la vraie femme" to me.
