BIBLICAL SIESTAS IN LA MOLA

FORMENTERA. It took me nearly 2 weeks to read the 40 page Prelude of Joseph and his brothers. I kept falling in deep sleep to come back and start all over again, not to miss a word. It is worth the effort, but you need to find the right “biblical” place for the deed.

"...the element of the past, by which we are customarily carried further, ever further, is a different past from the one into which we now begin our trembling descent: life's past, the world that was, the dead world to which - deeper, ever deeper - our life will one day belong and to which its beginnings are already consigned to considerable depths. Granted, to die means to lose time and be hurled out of it, but in return to gain eternity and a timeless present, and thus, for the first time, real life. For the essence of life is presentness, and only by means of myth does it represent its mystery in past and future tenses. That, as it were, is life's popular method for revealing itself, whereas the mystery belongs to the initiated. Let the people be taught that the soul wanders, but those with the knowledge are aware that this doctrine is but the garment of the mystery by which the soul enjoys a timeless present, with all of life belonging to it once death has released it from its solitary cell. When as adventurous storytellers we plunge into the past, we taste death and the knowledge of it - that is, the source of both our desire and our ashen-faced apprehension. But desire has more life - nor do we deny that it is bound up in the flesh. But the object of desire is the first and last of all our remarks and inquiries, of all our zeal: humanity - for which we shall search in the underworld and in death, just as Ishtar had searched there for Tammuz..."

FIG TREES in Formentera

FORMENTERA. There is always something biblical in a landscape of fig trees. I’m reading Joseph and his brothers and that makes it even look more like the Promised Land.
I read in Stella’s Roar about the magic of the word fig itself.
Is it a magic word?  Let’s see.

A ver.

LAND'S END in Formentera

And then nothingness

TOMATOES AND BÉCASSES

FOOD. P, our neighbour in La Mola, lives in Formentera all the year. In summer he grows tomatoes and picks them ripe, just sweet to eat.
In winter he hunts, like a squire of old times. He swears that he hunts "bécasses", a sought-after woodcock. Partridges too, and rabbits.
When the hunting season finishes at the end of January they organize a big lunch for all the town of La Mola. Then he fishes. He’s got a small boat, enough to reach his favorite fishing grounds north of La Mola.
He doesn’t grow grapes and doesn’t make wine himself but his friends do. He wouldn’t change himself for the King of Spain.
Well, during our stay in La Mola, we too eat a lot of tomatoes from his garden, and melons as well!
¡Y melones!

LAS DUNAS in Formentera

FORMENTERA. We used to spend our July holidays at Las Dunas. We did it for five years in a row, until it got too pricey. Prices doubled in 2 years for the same thing. So we started to withdraw, first to Es Caló, then to the “mountains” of La Mola.
It has gone through a few changes. Identical square white tables instead of the old round ones of random sizes. The wood table with benches, under the tree where my Philosophy classes were imparted, has gone too.
Still it is a nice place, by the long and narrow, rocks and sand beauty of Mitjorn beach. Still I can remember the emotion of arriving there those years. The love that was.
Still nice to have a paella by the pool, relishing the place. We do it every year. Still a wonder to swim at the beach in front of the houses, at 7 in the morning, with the rising sun.
I wouldn’t mind to stay there for a week, but not a long holiday, my love now elsewhere. I would, for the sake of the old flame.

THE MOJITO PARADOX 2

FORMENTERA. Alternatively to the birthday-mojitos (see THE MOJITO PARADOX):
Do it yourself and have them custom made and for a fraction of the price (or the Paradox of more mojito for less).
Even better: Train the younger in with useful skills for their future. We did train R and IÑ. They made a pretty good job as DJ’s too!

Alternativamente a los mojitos-cumpleaños (ver THE MOJITO PARADOX):

THE MOJITO PARADOX

FORMENTERA. With Mojitos at 9 euros throughout the island, one needs to develop some betting techniques to provide for some free booze.
I tried this one:
- What is more likely in a class of 30 people - University, School, whatever – two people to have the same birthday day or not?
I trained R and IÑ in some of these tricks. R is starting his first year of College in Munich this autumn and these tricks can be an occasional free beer provider too :-)

Notice: Let’s see if more practical Posts, like this one, attract new followers.
I will publish the answer to the question when I reach 50!

LA MOLA in Formentera

FORMENTERA. If you stay in Formentera, Ibiza seems a remote place, incomprehensibly metropolitan and in any case not worth the hardships of taking the boat to get there. If you stay in La Mola, the rest of Formentera seems the remote place.
In La Mola, Nieves – from Supermercat El Pilar – still sells her own sheep-and-goat cheese, our neighbor Pepe grows tomatoes, and at the Pequeña Isla they still prepare a rabbit stew.
There are two bars, but they close early. Only on Wednesdays and Sundays, when there is an Artisans Market, they stay longer.
We have been moving further and further into the island over the last years. This is our first stay in La Mola, over the last cliff. We cannot go any further, hide no more.
Note: At La Mola they make their own wine too, but the last time that we dined at the Pequeña Isla we accompanied the rabbit with a fruitier full-bodied fresh young Grenache from Priorat, Scala dei Negre, a Catalonian Wine. Nessuno è perfetto :-)

Pictures of empty Artisans Market’s stalls, on a Tuesday.

CHOCOLATE AFTERNOONS, WEED NIGHTS, WHO CARES ABOUT MORNINGS :-)

ART. This little piece is inspired on Jane's beautifully well written blog: Acidopholous morning, chocolate afternoon. Jane, forgive my Spaniard's English!

My new doctor's name is Alfonso. He is rich, like my tailor used to be, but happy. Remember I am a Spaniard, natural of a country of rich tailors until the 70s. But that is a different story.
My "pal" doctor is Paco, but nowadays if I am feeling nervous, anxious, sad, sleepless, restless or any other ailment, it is Alfonso who prescribes me his good-for-all weed biscuits.
Who can claim, approaching fifty, to still keep friends for High Noon "palas" at the beach, another one for "weeds" and other plants - say barley and vines - and still another one for blog followers searching in the nights of Seville, doubling as my former doctor too!
J, my eldest son, this is some weeks ago, was coughing in bed while talking non stop to IÑ, a sleepover friend. I gave him a ginger sweet. One of the ones that I had brought from Granada.  They did not claim to have any particular effect against coughing, but I did the claiming on their behalf. Believing is more important than any false claim anyway :-)
I also told them to stop talking. A "2am for 10 year's old" speech.
Amn't I a proud father! A excuse, a quarter of a hint of a excuse, a false excuse even, and I'm already talking of my 2 "pollitos". I still shy on that at the blog's gate most of the time though.
His answer: - I'm talking because I am sleepless.
Like saying, not for fun, what did you think.
My answer: - Not that I care if it is for religious reasons either.
They laugh. I can hear in J's laugh, uncontrolled, going deep, how proud he is.
Wasn't I saying how proud I was! And all in Alfonso's biscuits. Ain't that a friend?

HIGH MOON at Formentera

FORMENTERA. There is a HIGH NOON for the rougher Atlantic Sea, and a HIGH MOON for the quieter Mediterranean Sea at Formentera.
For this one you need nothing but the bare moon and a calm, clear like a spring, sea. We place ourselves into the water at midnight, waist deep, and then we have to count the toes in our feet under the light of the moon. Ten wins.
Diez gana.

In the picture W and myself in a 2006 Formentera HIGH MOON. We haven't managed to count 10 this year yet.

SPOT FORMENTERA (2)

SPOT FORMENTERA

FORMENTERA. With the exception of the touch of slow motion in some scenes of the spot, I can witness to its accuracy - the places show like they are, so is the atmosphere.
No merit though - anybody could have filmed it as long as he/she happened to be in Formentera, and the beer is OK too, as long as it is cold :-)

FORMENTERA REVISITED

FORMENTERA. When we started to vacation with them in Formentera, R and IN (W and A's children) were small kids, who taught J and N to swim, N barely walking, and would listen to my paid classes (I paid them to listen) on Philosophy.
The text book was Consolations of Philosophy, by Alain de Botton. I used to prepare a small resumé of each chapter every day - The Stoics, Epicurus and so on - and explain it to them under the shadow of a tree, with the blue sea below.
This year R will come later, with a friend, only for a week, after InterRailing Europe for a month. Well, not exactly like listening about Seneca under a tree :-)

JOSEPH IN FORMENTERA

BOOKS. I am bringing Thomas Mann's Bible-like, 1492 pages of small print, Joseph and his Brothers, colossal and dense work with me, for the long siesta hours of Formentera.  Well, only with an average 50 pages a day, it would be dealt with, in a month. It took the man 16 years to write it!
