TANGO in L

MUSIC. In spring the stars were the birds (Chorale in L) but summer was for Raquel, singing at W and A's hidden Shangri-Lá in Castille
B and M from Can Michaelet came too. The six of us dinned, drank, talked and laughed a plenty over the weekend but the star was Raquel in the dance at the village fête.
For real tangos you should better listen to Schindler's Tango or to Gardel himself, but hers was the magic tango of the summer. Then trillions of stars lighted the path on our walk from the village to the house.

MUSIC. This song is fixed on my memory to the Schindler's List film - of all movies the one that has made me cry more, over and over every time I happen to watch it.
I wanted here to honor this tango's author, Carlos Gardel, featured in this old movie singing the song himself.

KAYAK IN SAN SEBASTIAN

J and N. In one of my first Posts ever I wrote about kayaking around San Sebastian (KAYAK AROUND SAN SEBASTIAN) and I tagged it with a Health label. May be that is why I didn't get a single comment :-)
Now J and N are taking kayak lessons in the bay and they really like it!
I will take them kayaking to all the wonderful places that I used to kayak around, and I will write about all the adventures there, and I'll get a lot of comments, and ... so the dream goes.
One last dream today: Kayaking in Mermaid's river!

AN ALTERNATIVE RAMP(A)

ECONOMICS. Fishing by La Rampa's ramp is no doubt an alternative menu of choice to having the fish at La Rampa proper.
This time the fish we had to fish was N - playing fish in his kayak lesson by La Rampa's ramp - and lunch was but "fish fingers" later at home.
I wonder what his uncle - the FishKing himself - would think of the rampant (so to speak) English of this Post. His last comment was: <`))>{
Other fishes are welcomed to comment too. Both on the crisis crash-menu and on my crash-English too :-)

No sé que pensará su tío - el mismísimo FishKing - del inglés rampante (por decir algo) de este Post. Su último comentario fue: <`))>{

FOOD. La Rampa used to me my favorite place to have fish in San Sebastian. I remember, once, having dinner 3 times on the same week there! That was before the crisis :-)
If you survive it, it wouldn't be a bad place to celebrate it. The fish is the best around and they've got good white wines to go with it too. You will not find much more, but who needs more.

PLACES. Since I'm approaching my first anniversary as a blogger I'm afraid that my blog will start looking more and more like a pilgrimage thing, a rite of sorts.
I like revisiting the same places, mostly in the same seasons, to revive my little pleasures, and the blog might suffer now and then (read LE BLUE CARGO) from this habit too.
This time we have been with the children and one of J's friends.

ALBIZTUR REVISITED

MEMORIES. My mother ancestors having been farmers we have inherited some bits of land, and surveying them is the perfect excuse for a day in the countryside.
.

My grandmother's mother - Josefa Antonia Larrarte - was born in this farm in the 1860's.

The farm being nearly the top of the Hernio mountain benefits from stunning views.

N walking under the shadow of a beech grove. I remember the old b&w pictures of myself with N's age in the same surroundings.

Old house in Albiztur.
Casa antigua en Albiztur.

My grandparents on my mother side were married in this Church. Most likely my grandmother's parents too.

Red flowers.        Flores rojas.

Yellow and purple ones.       Amarillas y violetas.

THE WITCHES OF ZUGARRAMURDI

SAN SEBASTIAN. Zugarramurdi is a small town in the Basque mountains just by the French border, an hour from San Sebastian. The place couldn't be more idyllic.
In 1610 though, the Inquisition accused of witchcraft  53 neighbors. Most of them then died either in their way to prison, there, or burned alive at the stake. So much for choice in Ecclesiastical Justice.
The children, unaware, played at the akelarre's site in the underground cave.

IL SORPASSO (1962) with Vittorio Gassman

FILMS. The time of Ferragosto always brings this master film to my mind.
Driving on a hot summer Ferragosto weekend through Rome and Tuscany in Gassman's Lancia Aurelia convertible, one can witness how the economical "boom" of Italy in the early 60's was transforming a traditional society into an individualistic, consumerist and shallower one.
A lesson for any summer of any time.

LA MOLA in Formentera 3

FORMENTERA. I could keep posting stories on La Mola, the sweet watery taste of the tomatoes, the fragrance of oil and garlic, but I'll have to leave something for next year - the island is so tiny - or even for the harsher days of winter.
A last imaginary stroll. The town is nearly empty under the cloud of stars and the tepid air. The smell of fried lobster comes from one of the  tables at Can Blaiet. Calm reigns in its half empty terrace. At the Pequeña Isla there isn't even anybody at the front terrace, but one can hear voices coming from the back one. Three Frenchwomen play pool at Bar Pilar. I talk to the waiter for a while. At Xicu's they are bringing full plates of fried fish. It must be the fish that he has told me this afternoon that he had fished in the morning. His terrace is nearly full of people. At Can Toni, more curious patrons have arrived, searching with their eyes for the last hippies in the island. Then the town is over. More stars and the sounds of the earth just up to the lighthouse - sweeping with its intermittent light the darkness of the land.

ART. If I wake up in the early hours of the morning I do not listen to the radio, I listen to Roberto Sanchez. I feel lucky if I wake up around 5am because that means that I can still enjoy his “Si amanece nos vamos” program in Cadena Ser which goes from 4am to 6am Monday to Friday.
I do not even know if there are other alternative programs at these hours. I am not even addicted to the program itself. When the presenter takes his summer vacation and someone of his team takes over, I cannot stand the program and there is no radio for me then. If Roberto Sanchez is not there I get bored, even annoyed with the program, and switch it off. I do not even try another station. And that when I don’t even know what face the guy has got!
Note: The program is in Spanish.
Escucho a Roberto Sánchez.

LA MOLA in Formentera 2

FORMENTERA. T, a neighbor now in La Mola, took me early in the morning to Cala Codolar and then to Sa Cala, up and down the cliffs of La Mola. T was the first one leaving Las Dunas for this Promised Land.
While we climbed over rocks with the roaring sea below, I moaned to him about the last bakery in La Mola not making bread and almond pastries any more. I went there the first day when we arrived this year in Formentera, for my almond crocantes, and they didn't bake them no more.
T told me not to despair. Xico, a fisherman from La Mola had taken over the bakery from the old baker, who had a heart attack this last winter, and had consequently retired. Xico is no baker, but goes and fishes in the mornings with his boat and then in the evenings he prepares fish parrilladas at the old bakery.
Thomas Mann wrote his last book of Joseph and his brothers (Joseph the Provider) in Santa Monica, California. He could as well have written it in La Mola, Formentera.

ICE CREAM MARX :-)

ART. ICE CREAM MARX. A little Play.
Place: Any restaurant in F, or in fact any other place. W is having dinner with some friends.
Time: Summer time, distended atmosphere, desert time.
W (always after reading the desert's menu most carefully): Have you got any ice cream?
Waiter/waitress: Yes.
W: How many scoops come with the serving?
Waiter/waitress: Two.
It could be any other number but it happens to be the most usual one, at least in F.
W: OK, I'll have ... Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry.
Whatever the number stipulated by the waiter/waitress, and always the same flavors.
A long laughing and retelling of the story follows always for some minutes at the table.
P
I
ICE CREAM MARX.

TROPHY ISLAND

SAN SEBASTIAN. The day after, like to a trophy, I took many pictures of the island!

NO BOAT, THANKS!

SAN SEBASTIAN. For those of you that might remember (see BEACH AND POOL and BEACH AND POOL 2), we had been planning to swim to the island in the middle of San Sebastian bay.
Yesterday J made the crossing, non-stop, unaided, for the first time.
So much for the boat fare :-)

SALTED CHERRIES' BATH

TIPS. Another recipe:
1. Take an 8 year old son to the pier for a swim towards the anchored boats, preferably near the sunset hour.
2. Once well soaked in the cool salted water, walk home and place yourself and the boy in a bathtub full of hot water.
3. Get a bowl, sizable, full of cherries, the big black ones, and hold it over your stomach, half into the water (this is not part of the recipe, but if you are into the water that is what it will happen anyway). Then share them between both of you with the well honored method of, one-for- me-one-for-you, keeping turns for picking the ripest cherries. This is very important.
4. Stay in the bathtub until the water gets cold, then add more hot water.
Note: You could try it too with a girlfriend or something like that, but it is not quite the same recipe.
Otra receta:

BOOKS. Like water for chocolate is a Mexican masterpiece book and movie.
It is set in the Mexico of the beginning of the 20th century, when older daughters married first and the youngest stayed at home to take care of their aging parents.
In such a world, Tita and Pedro's love is wrapped in a beautiful story of "magic realism".
Tita's emotions become infused into her cooking, which affects the people who eat it, so the story is about wonderful recipes too!

CAN MICHAELET

FORMENTERA. It has become a fixed feature of our summer holidays in Formentera. B and M host a traditional Uruguayan “asado” with provolone, chorizo and all the rest of the official meats of such an event. M lived in Latin America for some years. I used to go to Uruguay every month for a while too.
This year it was an asado-fusion though, to include Catalonian butifarra. Even a better thing!  And white sangria to drink.
The conversation:
- Is it better to rent or to buy your dream holiday place? Like, is it better to have a girlfriend or a housewife?  Like the wanderer/potato-planter dilemma too.
- Related to the white sangria – B’s choice – and the butifarra, the conversation moved to snobbism. Salvador de Madariaga had 2 anecdotes about this sin nobilis thing. The first one was about the forked-with-a-knife-pea-eater who so outrages a fellow club member that for his part, the fellow friend, never again speaks to the pea-eater anymore.  The other about the 2 diplomats at a Sultan’s dinner in Istanbul, one eats the gruesome menu for the sake of advancing in their friendship with the Turk and the other refuses to have such revolting food and leaves the table, no matter the consequences. Who are the snobs here?
Well, for my part I had my red wine mixed with Coke, and throughout the evening had a nap on the veranda – not the first time that I’d done it at B and M’s - while the rest of the party continued their talking around.

Important note: M and B are fellow ex-Dunas lovers too.
