PencilandBoxBooks

PHOTOGRAPHY. B asked me to make one of my photo-books, for her exhibition in Blaye. We went there, talked, ate, drank, and made a lot of pictures.
The result is BARBARA À BLAYE, my first book on order!
I only "charged" her with the food and keep while at her place, and sent her in exchange the book, free-delivered too. So a business had started :-)
Anyone with an idea - his house, her paintings, his town, her boat, his pier, you name it - is welcomed.  I will go, walk around, take the pictures, and the resulting book will then be delivered free, like Barbara's.
No matter where you are, if you want the book, you just have to pick me at the closest airport/station and feed me while around taking the pictures. Isn't this a great business proposal?
.
NOTE: This offer is only available for Pencil&Box followers, so you better rush and become one if you haven't already :-)

BARBARA À BLAYE is on-line on Blurb Bookstore, free for anyone to watch.

San Sebastian Film Festival

September 27, 2011

THE ARTIST is: Michel Hazanavicius

FILMS. Remember the name. The theater, at the San Sebastian Film Festival venue, stood on an unending ovation to the French director Michel Hazanavicious, a shy man on jeans with an unlikely name. The movie, The Artist (2011), is filmed as a black&white silent movie and for moments it would appear that he was playing just to show off that to make a great movie you don't need neither color nor sound either.
We went to the view with W and A, our guests in San Sebastian for an extended weekend of films. W and I were the last ones to stop applauding, really excited by the film. I then went to congratulate Hazanavicius, a moment to store. Watch out this man!

SUSSEX GARDENS

LONDON. We will be staying at the Abbey Court Hotel in Sussex Gardens the first week of October, and this Post should double as a formal invitation to tea if you happen to be around and do not mind sharing it with a family of Spaniards with children. It will be the first time in London for the boys and they are already pretty excited about it  - Big Ben first on their list. I had the intention of showing them my sanctuaries of Roehampton, Richmond, Putney, South the River (read LONDON FOR JUAN) but they don't seem that interested. I would have driven them through Sussex (read PARADISE LOST) but it will have to be Sussex Gardens this time :-)

Quería enseñarles mis santuarios de Roehampton, Richmond, Putney, South the River (leer LONDON FOR JUAN) pero no parecen interesados.

CHICKEN OF THE SEA

SAN SEBASTIAN. Chicken of the Sea is an American brand of canned tuna. In San Sebastian they come in little boats instead, ready to learn to sail!

TAKE THIS WALTZ, like the song.

FILMS. This is a film that it's a homage to Leonard Cohen's song, and therefore by necessity a homage to Federico Garcia Lorca's poem, and then somehow it's a homage too to the beauty of the art of making movies. I wasn't going to write about this year's San Sebastian Film Festival (as yet) but the movie we went to watch yesterday evening "Take this Waltz" by the Canadian director - and actress - Sarah Polley, and to listen to the song again, with all its cravings and longings, hasn't let me wait more. I will let you know if it gets any prize.

Take this Waltz, by Leonard Cohen
.
The original "Pequeño vals vienés" from Lorca's Poeta en Nueva York:
.
En Viena hay diez muchachas,
un hombro donde solloza la muerte
y un bosque de palomas disecadas.
Hay un fragmento de la mañana
en el museo de la escarcha.
Hay un salón con mil ventanas.
.
¡Ay, ay, ay, ay!
Toma este vals con la boca cerrada.
Este vals, este vals, este vals, este vals,
de sí, de muerte y de coñac
que moja su cola en el mar.
.

Chagall. Sens Dessus Dessous.

ART. We went to the exhibition of Chagall in San Sebastian - running from July 23 to October 9 - and N liked this drawing. He went straight to it and said that this one is the one he liked. So even if it was forbidden I took a picture of it, lights on the ceiling and all!

NOTE: This one happens to be my 200th Post so I'll be celebrating listening to my "song of all times" again.

JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS, by Thomas Mann

BOOKS. I've just finished reading Thomas Mann's Joseph and his brothers. It has taken me more than two months to do so. A tale of sibling quarreling and fighting of biblical proportions. The seed of it coming from Ishmael and Isaac, Esau and Jacob, even from Cain and Abel. Like a curse from a jealous God perpetuated for all times and all nations.
It may even be that - images of our God - we are forced to dislike what we see of ourselves in our closest in kin and we do not like.
Having spent so much time reading Mann's words, I will borrow just a few from his book: "We are bitterest about accusations that are indeed false, yet not entirely so". Siblings are somehow fated to excel on that.

Alexander Gurevich's "Joseph and his brothers"

You can find references to the book in these Posts too: JOSEPH in Formentera, BIBLICAL SIESTAS, FIG TREES in Formentera, and LA MOLA 2.

RED CHINA BLUES by Jan Wong

BOOKS. I read about this book in a blog and I bought it through Amazon. It was in some of the blogs that I follow. Please, whoever it was come forward for the credit.
It is the personal story of a Canadian of Chinese descent in romance with Maoism, that goes to live in China at the height of the Cultural Revolution. Then, day by day, she ends up disappointed with the regime, surprise surprise.
I guess she wouldn't have need such a trouble for that. She could as well have joined a Big Western Corporation to find out the same faults of extreme authoritarianism, hypocrisy, arbitrariness, cult of personality, intrigue, fake believes that everybody pretends to believe, and fake slogans, without moving from home!
"The Corporations [by the end of the book she becomes a journalist for a Canadian newspaper] I had covered were scarily close in organization and outlook to the Chinese Communist Party, with their hierarchies of power, propagandist press releases and penchant for extreme secrecy. Just like China, they were dominated by an omnipotent chairman, complete with personality cult and sycophantic aides"
China has found the holy grail! They might even succeed, or bring us to the next crisis too!

PUMPKIN CINDERELLA

ART. Lisette's stories at Winterludes are a wonder. I cannot wait to hear more about her, every time. I 've been told that after midnight she becomes a pumpkin. I wish she wouldn't. It might be that is why she has got red hair! I couldn't think of anything else :-)

THE BEST OF THE SEASON

SAN SEBASTIAN. September is the best of the season in San Sebastian. The colors are prettier, the city is calmer, most of the tourist gone already, a few still left to give it a cosmopolitan air, the sea is warm, the occasional sunny day is like sipping the foam at the end of a milkshake, just not enough of it, just the moment to enjoy. Walking on the beach, slowly, one can hardly avoid feeling to be one of the "chosen few", like in Savoir Faire, a master of these things.
If you are ever to come around, choose September if you can.

ROYAL CHESS

J and N. This was during this weekend's exhibition of Spanish Chess Champion Miguel Illescas at the Miramar Palace in San Sebastian. While he played against 25 grown-ups seriously, the children found a "little corner" of the Palace to play between themselves for fun. The Miramar Palace used to be the summer residence of the Kings of Spain, so one could call this, playing Royal Chess :-)

FOOD. In Spain people like a lot to eat outside. But, for a summer lunch in Granada, I would recommend this cool, high ceiling  "Ermita", and a freshly made salmorejo - a creamy cool tomato soup.
Paco, in the picture, invited me to this, his favorite place in Granada, on my last visit in June. Thanks.

Gracias.

KRAMER VS KRAMER

FILMS. I've always loved Meryl Streep and I cannot help loving her here too, but what really gets me in this film is when either she or her husband hug their boy as if it wasn't anything else that mattered on the world.
A, a friend, is fighting the custody of his child. I wish good luck to father and boy.
I guess that being a child of divorced parents myself makes me specially touchy with these things.

LIDL

TIPS. First it was the still unsurpassed 81% Chocolate from Arriba. Then the Proviact yogurt at 75c for 4 and tastier than the fashion Greek ones. Two week ago I bought a futon - with a beautiful stripped pattern - for €60, to leave it permanently as my own bed at Paco's apartment in Madrid. Now I've bought a bread making oven.
Friend Willi is the Lidl expert and personal adviser in these matters.  He bought one in Germany recently and told me to buy it (€49) and I've made my first bread ever.
Believe it or not you just have to pour the ingredients carelessly and it mixes them, waits for fermentation, mixes them again or whatever needs to be made to make bread, et voilà, a bread comes. Tastes like Heaven!
.
EDITOR'S NOTE: I want to apologize to those of you who were led to understand that the previously featured picture in this Post was something else than a piece of advertising for the Lidl machine. I've removed it and replace it with my own favorite RUSTIKALIS VOLLKORNBROT, well, for what was left of it only after a few hours!  SEPTEMBER 8, 2011.

Sabe a gloria!
.
8 SEPTIEMBRE 2011.

NEW BLOG HEADER

ART. Matt Willey once recorded his decision-making on a feature design for the Royal Academy magazine. A very close friend has just forwarded it to me.
Believe it or not, it could have been me working on my new header. Well, it took me longer I think :-)
Note: It reminds me too my time as a Product Manager designing margarine tubs!

ONE YEAR OF PENCIL-AND-BOX

EDITORIAL. In its first year, Pencil-and-Box has published nearly 200 Posts and received more than 900 comments and 10,000 visitors. Thank you.
The aim of Pencil-and-Box when first published was to write about things useful to know and not evident how to find, like special places, fruity wines, good books and movies, and other stuff for the discerning reader, whoever he was, wherever she might be. Boring days and books, bland conversations, unmemorable dinners and wines, were out of the formula.
Then, throughout the year, things have developed on their own under the influence of the brotherhood of blogs that I have discovered. Acidopholous morning, chocolate afternoonFolding FieldsArtful Nuance; Winterludes;  the effervescent Stella’s Roar; the nostalgic Savoir Faire; the extraordinarily delicate Hattat;  Yvonne Osborne’s enlightening Cheated article; and many others. Influenced by their writing, more sections have been added to Pencil-and-Box, like the Liberté-Égalité-Fraternité one, which I intent to develop further. And the Philosophy section - about life itself – and the Memories one too.
didn't want to write about myself, but my mother got ill and then she died. One thing led to another and I felt that I had to tell something about my life and thoughts, if only to make my choice of things better understood. When I write about a €2 chocolate tablet, or a $20 wine-included menu by the sea, or a free swim at a public pier, there is something there that probably needs some explanation.
Pencil-and-Box breaths with its own share of biases too. My favorite is compromise, which in this particular use of the word means not telling more than what it is necessary for a story.  Creating something involves making sacrifices, to be available to some kind of vulnerability. When you find things in life that you value you want to keep them, but with a dignity, that of what you really want to be.
My interest in writing came from my love of the classics, how they stood the pass of time, the awe of immortality, how meaningless was all the rest, how strong can be the mystic of art. It is not the first time that I've fallen in love with words, colors and sounds. Yeah, I’m not Proust, neither Thomas Mann nor Plato, but thanks to Blogger - whoever they are my sincere thanks to them - here I’m writing again.
As for changes, Pencil-and-Box has just undertaken a change in its design to commemorate this Anniversary. The new design shows already in the blog, and the old one gets its farewell here too.
You can see I am not man of big changes, so please help me, what else should I change, improve, correct, or add, to be more useful?  I will most willingly oblige.

Original Header.      Cabecera original.
