OWL BOYS

MUSIC. For more than a year my two little owls listened to the song non stop in YouTube.
The Owl outside my door, with Judith's "Owl in my study" and her "Owl on my coach" has awakened my memory. I remember the owls at West Marton, a little town in Yorkshire. I used to travel there once every month to visit a Cheddar Cheese factory. There were owls all around. Just in front of the Bed&Breakfast where I used to stay there was always an owl and I could hear the owls hooting in the woods during the night too and I got attached to them.

THE BEST BITTER

POETRY
.
My favorite bitter then
the name had Flower(s),
I had an Abbot Ale instead
it wasn't bad either.
.
He could be in twenty years to go
what I was twenty years ago.
.
I could have chosen the maiden
flower all the way,
I chose instead the farewell
flower as an ashtray.
.
He could be in twenty years to go
what I was twenty years ago.

PRIVATE VIEWING at THE BRITISH MUSEUM

TIPS. Be there by 10 in the morning and go to the single - nearly hidden - lift on your right by the arc of the entrance to the courtyard of the Museum. It will take you straight into the Roman displays on the 3rd floor and you will have the Romans all by yourself for a good half an hour at least. The crowd entering the Museum tends to linger at the magnificent courtyard and then either starts from the ground floor exhibitions or if decides to start from the top goes to see the mummies at the other end first. Being on ones one in such a place is a real treat to the senses.

CONRAN'S PLAY ZONE

LONDON. Courtesy of Sir Terence Conran, J and N spent the best part of a Friday afternoon - all London steaming with tourists - playing leisurely at his nice and peaceful quarters at Sloane Av. No surprise. I used to go there to buy jars of Conran sweets :-)

RICHARD III, what a coincidence!

J and N. J and N are 11 and 8 years old, which as one of the Yeoman Warder of the Tower of London repeatedly mentioned to them in a "menacing" voice is NEARLY 12 and 9, the age of the infant Edward V and his younger brother the Duke of York when they disappeared 18 days after being brought to the Tower. Nobody saw them any more. 9 days later their uncle was crowned King of England as Richard III. According to Shakespeare's play of the same name - Richard III - it was Richard himself who ordered their death. In the words of our Beefeater Warder, nobody knows what really happened but WHAT A COINCIDENCE!
The best adaptation - a modernized version - I've seen of the play is the 1995 film with Sir Ian McKellen - master of masters - in Richard III' s role. Not at all a COINCIDENCE! And worth watching.

Nadie volvió a verles.

RICHMOND HILL SAFARI

LONDON. A short train ride, a gentle slope up the Hill by the art galleries, and there they are the deer at Richmond Park.

MEMORIES. Endless hours and endless days went by the old wooden tables at Dôme. A long time already the corner between the Kings Road and Beaufort Street is occupied by the Beaufort House. Only the semicircular bar, I remember a few  breakfasts, remains the same.

BIBENDUM

FOOD. It is the favorite place in London of P, the father of a friend of N. It hasn't changed for 20 years, that is as far as I remember - I'm not that old after all!

SPANISH POLITICS

POLITICS. I don't follow Spanish politics very closely but with the engines of a general election already heating on, as a periodical I've felt that I had to post an opinion.
With that purpose in mind I have made a list of politicians that I like of the 2 major Spanish parties. A prerequisite to be in the list has been that either I knew them personally, or that I had reliable references or that I've had the opportunity of following their work at a close range.
For the governing Socialist Party I've got: Ramón Jauregui and Odón Elorza.
For the opposition Popular Party: Antonio Basagoiti, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón and Javier Arenas.
So far that makes 3-2 for the Populars.
I know the approach is limited. If something really new happens to change my editorial vote I'll post it here.
PS: Now Bildu - a sort of Spanish Sinn Fein - has won the local elections in San Sebastian. And they are keeping the city cleaner than ever. So is life, unpredictable always. They are in favor of a Republic i.e. against the Monarchy too!

COFFEE AT THE GALLERY

ART. We didn't see any of the Botticelli (for the full story read PARADISE LOST) that I had wanted to show them. The Canaletto paintings they liked. I could make them understand the beauty of the Portrait of Jacobus Blauw by Jacques-Louis David, one of my favorites portrait painters. But then, Monet didn't draw good enough for their taste, Cezanne,  well, I couldn't get any further, and Van Gogh's Sunflowers, I had to insist that it was the most expensive painting ever, only to be told if wasn't that the Mona Lisa. But they liked the ginger biscuits at the National Gallery's Café where we spent half the morning, chatting with Jo - hadn't seen her for nearly three years - and that was even better than the Botticelli :-)

ST JAMES' DECK CHAIRS

LONDON. In this never ending summer the Park was flowered by the all time green stripped chairs and the other flowery patterned ones too, like if we were to ignore winter forever.

DINNER AT LIBERTY'S

LONDON. I must definitively be a nostalgic. I bought a dinning table at Liberty's 20 years ago and I'm about to buy a new one at Liberty's now and make it delivered all the way to San Sebastian. We spent a good hour watching and touching the table. M likes it too, but - this being a democracy of sorts - J is not yet ready for a change. N doesn't seem to care really, both more interested anyway in Hamleys down the road!

FALLING IN LOVE with Meryl Streep

FILMS. My friend Blas (see Lutry-Epistemology) used to say that falling in love was like falling with an illness. But I could never help falling in love with Meryl Streep in Falling in Love (1984).
I had promised - in a blog - a story about trains. The one in the movie is much better that any of mine's, so that will be it.
