MEMORIES. My grandfather was a rural doctor in the Basque countryside from where he came from - that was at the beginning of the last century - and then, after the Spanish Civil War, he became a city doctor with the victors Red Cross in Bilbao.
During the war, the republican Red Cross, based its front headquarters in the ground floor of his house. The Northern Front remained 7 months in the next valley, 10 miles from the house. The republican doctors knew him from their studying days in Valladolid and took care that nothing happened to him while they were there.
The house now belongs to my mother, his only child. My grandfather used to spend 2 weeks every summer there, throughout all his live, and all the summer once he retired. I remember walking through his forests with him, holding his hand.
We have been going there at least for a week every summer too, and sit in the garden and tell old stories. When my grandmother was alive she would tell them all, with her smooth, pleasant voice. How the republicans confiscated their car and their German radio, the only ones in the small town, and they were ordered to remain at home in a sort of house arrest, but nothing else happened to them.
Juan and Nicolas, my grandfather's grand-grandsons have been going there every year since they were born too.
August 2006
