THE GRASS ISN'T ALWAYS GREENER THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE

BIKING. No, this is not another one of biking in Austria but training around San Sebastian for next year's trip!

DONAUTIPS

BIKING. If someone of the readers of this periodical is going to bike down the Donau, here are some tips from our journey:

1.Feldkirchen. Worth stopping around if only for the  Marillenknödel at Wögerer's Wirsthaus. The best ones of our trip. A delicious dessert of two big Marillenknödels for 3.90€. It made our dinner! The bike road from the town to the swimming lake was really nice too.
2.Gasthof Böhm at Persenbeug.  Enjoy the "nature"  unfiltered beer under the tree. Better even than advertised. Tasty dish of roasted mushrooms, potatoes and carrots. Nice rooms too with a terrace and flowers.
3.Wachau wines. We stayed at the Lehensteiner's at Weissenkirchen. Front rooms looked really nice although we got the back ones. They made their own wine, as most of the "houses" in town. In the picture W and A posing for this review.
4.Middle of nowhere. Just to recommend something in the middle of nowhere, we had a wonderful dinner - and beer - at a very small town out of the main route, at Tiefenbök's Restaurant in Tiefenfucha. We walked there from Oberfucha - also in the middle of nowhere - under the stars. Couldn't get a better beer in Vienna.
5.Favorite in Vienna, as mentioned in the previous Post, was the Judenplatz. Also nice the Plachuttas Restaurant, by the Opera, for a noisier night. We did like the bars and terraces along the Shubertring but didn't sit in any.
Note: Having biked for a few hours before probably had a positive influence in the above mentioned perceptions :-)

Wögerer. Feldkirchen
 Gasthof Böhm. Persenbeug
Lehensteiner. Weissenkirchen
 Tiefenbök. Tiefenfucha
 Plachuttas. Vienna

JUDENPLATZ

PLACES. If we had to recommend a favorite one of all the nice little corners of Vienna - and I believe I am speaking for the four of us in the biking team - it would be the Judenplatz. Perfect for lunch or dinner or for having a beer. In the heart of the city but peaceful  enough even in the middle of the tourist season. Beautiful, and full of meaning too.

340 KM FOR A SACHER TORTE

BIKING. We arrived at the door of the Opera House in Vienna on our bikes - so much for the love of music -  all the way from Passau in Germany. The prize I had envisaged for such a feat was a slice of Sacher Torte. The Sacher Hotel being in front of the Opera's back door, just a coincidence!
The last time I had one was 20 years ago. I remembered it as the utmost chocolate pleasure but I was somehow disappointed this time. I can remember those times vividly - we all must have changed a lot - but I can still recreate that taste on my mind.

SCHWALLENBURG

BIKING. It took us across the Danube from Grein to short cut on the rest of the team - crossing by a bridge further up the river. We became dear friends of both the boat and the boatman during the short river crossing. Have many happy crossings Schwallenburg!

SPANISH REPUBLICANS IN THE DANUBE

LIBERTÉ-ÉGALITÉ-FRATERNITÉ. 16.500 Spanish Republicans found their deaths in Mauthausen Concentration Camp (180.000 Jews).
The place were they were killed looked like what might have been a prison kitchen. There, people were killed like if they were domestic animals. It turned my stomach and I nearly fainted.
Downhill from the camp on my bike, surrounded by a calm countryside, my heart still beat in anguish.

IN VINO VERITAS

BIKING. But biking further down the Danube, in the Wachau region, we couldn't help having a bottle, and two too, of their Grüner Veltliner wines!

THE CATCHER IN THE CORN

BIKING. I wasn't aware there was so much corn in Austria. For the first 200 Km down the Danube river corn was all over the place. I even dreamt one night with corn taking over, in a sort of alien invasion. I was trying to escape on a bike. That's the sort of dream one gets after pedaling on a bike one day after the other!

BIKE AND BLOG

NOTICE. We will be biking with some friends, down the Danube from Passau to Wien, for the next 10 days or so. If any of the readers of this blog is along the route we'll welcome a glass of lemonade
But even more than that, if anyone - in the world - knows how to make blogger work on an iPad I will even be able to post from the road!
Note: I have already downloaded like 3 different Apps and none seems to let me edit my Posts properly.

Nota: Ya he bajado como 3 Apps y ninguno parece dejarme editar mis posts bien.

JAZZ ON THE STREET

SAN SEBASTIAN. The San Sebastian Jazz Festival takes place around the end of July. There are the big concerts and all that but, I believe, one of the bits to enjoy the most is to go along the city and listen to the music on the street.

EPICUREAN SALAD

FOOD. ... Those who had heard the rumours must have been surprised to discover the real tastes of the philosopher of pleasure. There was not grand house. The food was simple. Epicurus ... was happy with a dinner of bread, vegetables and palmful of olives. "Send me a pot of cheese, so I may have a feast whenever I like" he asked a friend. Such were the tastes of a man who had described pleasure as the purpose of life.
He had not meant to deceive. His devotion to pleasure was far greater than even the orgy accusers could have imagined. It was just that after a rational analysis, he had come to some striking conclusions about what actually made life pleasurable - and fortunately for those lacking a large income, it seemed that the essential ingredients of pleasure, however elusive, were not very expensive..."
Transcript from Alain de Botton's Consolations of Philosophy.

Favorite salad ... with olives must be a treat!

MEMORIES. We used to take the bus to go to Aizkorri to the beach at the old stop it had by the railroad crossing. There is not a rail track there any more, it went underground. I do not remember holding his hand. I was too old for that, too shy too. He was the closest thing I'd got to a father. Uncle Rober made pictures too and developed them at his studio at the old Algorta harbor. What little I know of it I've got it from there. He was- and is - a master photographer, books published and all. I'll always be an unconditional admirer, like the child I was.
This here is the latest photo sent by him to me (sends one every month). It made me hum Joan Manuel Serrat's - a Catalan composer and singer - Barquito de Papel (paper boat). It might have been the Mediterranean Sea of Barcelona where he lives and the picture must have been taken. It might have been the memories of those frail times.
