LES NEIGES DU KILIMANDJARO (2011) by Robert Guédiguian

FILMS. Les neiges du Kilimandjaro (The Snows of Kilimanjaro) isn't directly linked to Ernest Hemingway but to a French pop song of the same name. On a very French day - we had lunch with one of Herve's wines and went to the movies to watch a movie in French - Susana, a friend, spent the day with us waiting for the night train from San Sebastian to Lisbon.
Like nearly all French Midi films it's full of la joie de vivre, and this one, on top of that, has got a soul as clean as, well, snow. I will not say more about the Marseillaise family featured in the film. Watch it and I believe you'll have the snow feeling too.
We had a wonderful day with Su. It rained all day but the sun came from Marseille.

IMPERIAL SPAIN by J.H.Elliott

BOOKS. According to J.H.Elliott, Regius Professor Emeritus in the University of Oxford and eminent Hispanist, Spanish Empire lasted only 2 centuries, a quick rise of a barren, impoverished and isolated country to become the greatest power on-earth, which just as quickly fell into decline. Then, for the last 3 centuries, Spain has lived in its post-Imperial era, always a difficult thing to be.
It was debt which brought the Empire to a quick end, and debt had been a sin in Spain since them. But the last 20 "sweet" years seem to have been enough to forget all.
The book is worth reading and it's a good introduction into the depths of the country too, both for natives and foreigners.

EUROPEAN BICYCONOMY

ECONOMICS. The economy is like a bicycle. If you stop pedaling you fall over. Like in a Monopoly game, a very strict, non-lending Bank, makes for a dull and extremely conservative game, always in constant fear with every decision of going bust and being left out of the game.
When riding a bicycle, if you start thinking about how it stands on two wheels without falling, there it is when you fall. This goes for the European "Housekeepers".
Without faith in recovery, in our strengths, and in our ability to overcome our problems and reinvent ourselves, Europe can become worse than a Monopoly game, and worse than boring too.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

FILMS. The story is beautiful, the setting is beautiful. Though the 1945 book by Evelyn Waugh is somehow drier than the magnificent, emotional 1981 BBC Series, one of my favorites of all times.
The latest movie (2008) is good too. Britain ruled in deed, a hundred years ago!

(P)ACO's CD's

MUSIC. Paco (P) is a physician by trade, but his passion is music.
Some of you wondered about The Window picture in Seville. What was there?
Well, this is just another wall. And there are more.

MAHLER'S FIRST ON THE ROAD

MUSIC. When driving on my own I tend to listen music in a repeating way. I remember, living in England, listening endlessly Puccini's Boheme while driving from Roehampton to Burguess Hill in Sussex and back, for months, then changing to Verdi's Traviata, then Genesis' A Trick of the Tail, and so on.
These last months, driving from San Sebastian to the office in Bilbao, rain or snow, it has been Mahler's First turn, another favorite.
I can still remember too the first time I listened it in a concert hall, at Madrid's Auditorium, with friend P.
