RAMSEY, LAND (and WATER) OF OPPORTUNITY

AROUND ATHENS. We went to watch an indoor Swimming Meet at Ramsey Center - Georgia vs North Carolina. The warmth of the cheering followers of the Georgia team made me jump into the water - I took my clothes right there on the stand - at the training pool besides.
I made 2.500 meters - 100 laps - in 1 hour 6 minutes! I felt like pushed.
Then I put my clothes back and went to enjoy the diving competition.
I've been regularly making the distance twice a week the last 2 years in San Sebastian, in Hegalak, the new underground pool by the beach, and have never managed to do it below 1h 10m. (Today in 1h12m i.e.).

BETTING FOR HODEI

FLORIDA. We met with Belen (see Iturrikoa revisited) and her daughters for a good Cuban dinner at the Hallendalle's Padrinos and then went to bet for Hodei - Emma's husband - at the Jai Alai. Nor he nor we did win. The place was nearly empty but the beautiful sport was beautifully played. I hadn't seen any better since my children days at the big Jai Alai in Munitibar, my mother's home town in the middle of Jai Alai's Basque hinterland.
The basque diaspora in Miami, concentrated around the game, still hopes - halfheartedly - for a revival of sorts of the good all times when Jai Alai was played in dozens of cities in America, and in other countries too.
Like gladiators they salute. A few cheers come from our seats. This is America - the land of the impossible - and they are Americans in that way.  Leire too, the other daughter of Belen, fights her own American dream fighting for her place on the world. This time in research, something difficult back in Europe right now. And life as it is, Jai Alai might come to help her. Best wishes to all.

Best wishes to all.

THE PALMS SIESTA

FLORIDA. The days at the Keys were nice but the siestas were the best of it.
We went in a snorkeling catamaran to the reef and under the mangroves in a kayaking expedition, eight kayaks in a row, but with that and all  I managed every day to  have my "borriquillo" siestas - the delicious ones one has after breakfast - at my un-shared spot under the Palms Hotel porch in Key West. All to be said the "borriquillo" ones weren't the only siestas that I had.
The Mattheessen's fudge, combined, wasn't a bad option either.

PS. I found the Palms Hotel in a New York Times article about the Florida Keys, and that was the beginning of this story.
