HORCHATA LUNCH BY THE GUGGENHEIM

TIPS. This was another failed lunch. I had a couple of meetings in Bilbao and then I had planned for a lunch. But plans 1, 2, and 3 failed and I ended substituting lunch for a (large) glass of horchata at Bilbao's Doña Casilda Park. Horchata is a sort of nut milk made with the brown tubers ("chufas") from the root of a nut sedge plant typical of Eastern Spain. But if you happen to be around Bilbao, visiting the Guggenheim or otherwise, this Northern horchata is worth the incursion in the Park, a short walk from the Museum. Chilled but liquid, as it should be. Silky and creamy.
The mild autumn weather helped - I took off jacket and tie to better enjoy the treat of drinking it slowly.

ON MATTRESSES, CHAIRS AND GUITARS

ART. Art is certainly obsession for details. A shadow, anything, can change the meaning of it all. Of course art isn't practical, how could it be?
It happened again with the dinning room chairs. I was surprised of how well the decision about the table had gone. No doubt it took a while (years), but once the decision made, and then when the table was brought home, it settled in its place quite nicely. It was nearly (an strange) feeling of peace of mind. I hoped the same was going to happen with the chairs. But it was not to be.
When I lived in London it took my "mattress builder", an artist in his own way, to make 3 different mattresses, all striped, to find the one that made my sleep perfect. That was in one of the Fulham Road bed-makers. Before I had ordered by phone a mattress at a Department Store, which went back its way too.
With the chairs it seems that it is all again back haunting me. Some of them have been going up and down from a furniture store in Bilbao, whom do not seem to mind to have travelling chairs (so far), and we have ended keeping two of them, like if they were two sculptures. To complete the set, after a thorough research (easier now in the internet era) I ended finding a local chair maker (after a world wide search) with "the chair" as it had to be. But the one he had ready made was in "grained" white painted wood. I took it home nevertheless, but I wanted, yes, the chair body to be white, but smoother both to seat and to look at. More whole as a concept. In the conversation that followed, they offered to find a very white beech and then just dye it in white too. To make the story short, I didn't like the result completely. It came a bit pinky, like dirty soap water. Then I ordered, to be made, 4 of the whiter grained ones, as a better alternative, to end up suffering with them at home (and everyone liking them but me).
Thinking and thinking I have found what I don't like of them. They look like a guitar, with a lot of strings! I've always been a piano man myself, with its lacquered keys.
Nobody is very happy with me right now. They have offered to take all the chairs back and to forget about it. But I want the chairs, only they to have a plain white body to go with its clear beech legs. The dream of an artist I call it.
Others might call it other names. :-)

ICH LERNE DEUTSCH

ECONOMICS. It seems to be contagious. Since Germany started to be seen as the center of the Empire, and Angela Merkel as its Empress, everything German has become much more on fashion than what it used to be in other European countries.
The other thing coming with it has been the believe that only if they (the Germans) were to want, all the problems will be solved, as if they (the problems) had nothing to do with our skills and ability to deal with them but with the German will to bring over the table the resources to solve them. The well known recipe of fear mixed with devotion, and all coming from an utter ignorance and no proper analysis of how things work. The perfect recipe for a disaster.
I remember a meeting that I had in Berlin last May with a top officer of the German Ministry of Economy - and a Board Member of the European Investment Bank (EIB) himself. I questioned him about the best policies out of the "European economic paralysis", so to speak. I didn't find a policy issue there, but a trustworthiness one on the ability to implement those policies in the different countries.
In the "different" countries, like the one I am speaking from, there is too much cronyism, too many people appointed to their jobs, public and private, without the right skills and qualifications for the tasks on hand.
I must admit that a very important part of me joining the Official Language School in San Sebastian (on the picture) to learn German is based on enjoying, even more, our annual bike trips along, mainly, German rivers (me being more of a snob than a man of fashion).
But if so much we all expect from Germany it wouldn't be a bad idea to learn some more of the German ways (and thoughts)!

PALAS FIELD

SAN SEBASTIAN

Like gladiators, we C and I, hold the ground of our palas (wooden racket) field on the beach.
Soon the raining season will start.
Meanwhile, we play face to face, nailed to the sand, the ball straight from racket to racket, its echoing regular sound.
Like an old ritual, then follows the bath, the drying on the sand while enjoying a frugal lunch.
Nothing new any more. That its immortal beauty.

For more on "palas" read: HIGH NOON at La Concha.

"Txirin" AZKORRI

PLACES. The end of the season is may be the best of it always. Places start to get empty but still in full blossom.  I went with friend A to the Azkorri "Txirin", some 20 Kms from Bilbao along the coast. And old made of wood beach bar that I remembered from ages ago, somehow modernized with a bright coat of white paint and bits of intense pink-violet color here and there.
The grilled sardines were magnificent and so were the local tomatoes. And the few people around, a couple and a young woman on her own, relaxed, looking at the see below, were of a kind that create an easy and enjoyable atmosphere too.

MADRID. The weather in Madrid this time of the year is pure joy. Lightfull, with a caressing sun. I had to spend a day there for a meeting and a lunch. One of those day trips to the capital. The meeting went fine but the lunch was cancelled a the last minute. I took to walk on the nice day down to Santa Engracia and there I sat on the terrace of a new place (for me), Osteria La Norma. It happened to be run by an elderly Sicilian couple, who spoke a very rudimentary Spanish, so during most of our conversation they spoke straight in Italian. They laid a big table for me under the shadow of the tree in the corner of the street. La Osteria La Norma just happens to be in the corner between the streets of Santa Engracia and Españoleto. A big and well ironed white cloth was placed on the table. The Sicilian pasta and the dessert of the menu too were rich and tasteful, full of flavors, like the Sicilian food is. I believe that the name of the lady was really Norma, the place named on her honor. It remind me of the time that we went to Sicily, and to the Sicilian restaurants in Rome too. A treat. And very affordable too.
